Lancaster County, Pennsylvania
Lancaster has a population of over 500,000 residents with 14% of the population of 65 years of age. Median income of that 14% is around $33,000 with median housing costs revolving around $1,000. Despite the low income, the county's poverty rate in 2003 was roughly 8% way below the national rate of 12.5%.
Known as Pennsylvania Dutch Country, Lancaster boasts the nation's largest Amish (Pennsylvania Dutch) population. The city is a major attraction for retirees partially due to its mild climate. Game lands are a considerable attraction to Lancaster. There are a total of six state game lands for hunting, trapping, and fishing located right within Lancaster County. Additionally, the county boasts rare ecosystems such as grasslands and savannas. With so much lush environment to view it is not surprising that there are preserves with beautiful hiking trails overseen by the Lancaster County Conservancy. The electric trike and fast electric scooters are favorites of Lancaster residence, enjoying the temperate weather and gorgeous trails. If you enjoy site seeing then you will appreciate the one-hour commute to Philadelphia and the 90 minute commute to Baltimore.
Lancaster County's most notable attribute to Pennsylvania is its agriculture. Nearly a half of the county is zones for aquiculture, about 20 acres of farm land per residence. With a strong farming industry, over 5200 farmers, the state provides a fifth of Pennsylvania's agricultural output.
Sites include twenty-nine picturesque covered bridges (over 200 in Pennsylvania), American Music Theatre, Dutch Wonderland, Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania and many more attractions. Currently, Lancaster is building a controversial $170 million convention center in downtown Lancaster. The purpose of the convention center is to promote the revitalization of the city's center.
